Don't worry; Damon is back already. He is alive, he can smell Bonnie and Elena's locks of hair, he even knows who he is. Had I known that Midnight was the last book of the Vampire Diaries I would write, I would have made it even more clear that he was alive. But never fear, the series isn't over, and Damon will return. Would I kill off my own favorite character? No! And neither will the ghostwriter.

I was wondering in what order I should read Terry Pratchett's books? Online it says that reading them by publication date isn't really the best way to go about it, and that technically you could read them in any order. Do you have any suggestions about what order to read them in?

When I was reading Spellbinder a few months ago, I wondered about the character names. I mean, for lamia, their names are about animals, trees, and gems. For shapeshifters, their names (except maybe for the First House) are based on their animal forms. But what about witches? Are their names connected to anything in particular?
In Witchlight, you said that children of the First House choose their animal form when they become adults. But what about normal 'shifters? How do they know which form was chosen for them? Are they only able to shift into their form when they become an adult, or earlier?
Here's hoping that you respond. And if anyone else might have the answers to these questions, please answer me too!
Okay, here goes: Witch's first names are simply normal names, although it's perfectly proper to name yourself after a goddess. For witches, the meaning is in the last names. All Harman children are direct descendants of Hellewise Hearth-Woman, whose name became corrupted over time to "Harman," just as Dani Abforth's last name was taken from "All-bringing-f orth." But only females can pass the Harman name to their children--the boys pass their father's names down.
Normal shapeshifters are born into a line of shapeshifters-- if your parents are wolves, you are a werewolf. If your parents were bears, you are a bear (which makes naming a new baby easy. They are born with their shifting power--remember how Keller got stuck in her half-and-half form of a baby panther in Witchlight?
Okay? I think I covered it. There will alsoo be some surprises in Strange Fate.

I'm a fan of Delena so I can tell that end of the book was sad for me because in my opinion I do not think Elena and Stefan are soulmates the 'love' between the two is not real almost like a obligation. While the love between Damon and Elena is really true for me, the passion and tenderness that one feels for another is touching I think that all the girls in the world want a love like this.

I have to say that I will not read the other books, they were not written by you. It is revolting to know that a series so beautiful and that has helped thousands of people would be finished by a person who knows nothing about the characteristics of the characters.
Would you change the ending that will be done? You prefer that Elena stays with Damon? If you were allowed on justice would you put your vison of the end of the series on the website?Sorry if the questions were too bold.

For that reason, I would not put up my endgame scenario on the Internet--that and the fact that I honestly don't know what should happen to all of the characters at the end. I have ideas, but the characters themselves are not telling me which reality they prefer.

I would recommend that you try The Forbidden Game if you want a character who is like Damon in many ways. It has an anti-hero who is cruel and conniving on the outside and is also madly in love with a human girl. If you want vampires, vampires, vampires, try the Night World series.

Second, I didn't have anything to do with the Night World Guide except for the comments by me at the end. But let me think. If your mother was a witch and your father a shapeshifter, you would be both (like Mal in Strange Fate.) Then if you were bitten by a werewolf and changed, you could actually be all four!
As for the chapters of Strange Fate in the Guide, they were real, but edited by my editor, so they won't be exactly the same in the book.
Don't worry; he will come back in the next book, even if Phantom is in most ways completely different from the way I wrote it.

Please, don't stop writing! You could write your own "The Hunters". Your version. And maybe you could publish it later with a other title or something like that. Do anything but please don't stop writing on "the vampire Diaries"!
Excuse my bad english, I'm just a 14 years old girl from germany who is absolutly in love with your books. I just wanted to show you that "the vampire diaries" does mean a lot for many people. Not only in America, all over the world!

In the meanwhile, while you are waiting for Vampire Diaries, maybe you could try some of my other books. I believe they are available in Germany. I would be very happy if you did that.
Don't be afraid as an aspiring writer. Just make sure that you have a good agent. In any case, it was not the publishers who did this to me (or not at first). It was the book packager. A book packager sells books, already with the covers on, to a publisher. I got involved with them because they called me and asked me if I would like to write a trilogy about vampires that would definitely be in the bookstores (my first two books, despite good reviews, were hardbacks that almost no one bought, because they were not in bookstores.) So I agreed to write this vampire trilogy, and the rest is history.

I was wondering if you have any music picked out to go along with your books, or scenes from your books?
Today I was listening to my iPod, which was on shuffle, and I realized when certain songs came on I thought, "Oh, that is a Night World song".
Certain songs really make me think of characters from your books.
I think it would be cool to hear what songs you think go well with some of your books.
Every time I hear Evanescence I think of your stories, of course it's usually the darkest scary parts of your stories that I think of, but those tend to be my favorite parts. (Hmm, now I sound Morbid)
I also listen to music while writing. It's actually quite funny because in the middle of a story if a happy song comes on, all of a sudden, my story takes a crazy bi-polar trip and every character has become happy. And then I have to take out huge chunks in my story because who wants a bi-polar character who can't decide if she is happy or sad.
And, if you hadn't noticed, I tend to ramble on and on. Thanks for listening. hehe

The quotes I like the most are "Salvatore, as in saviour," and "I thought even you could understand such a simple sentence, father. Shall I recite it in Latin?"

And Damon is silent for a beat or two and then says, very much on his dignity, "Am not."
Or there is always the infamous Bonnie in the bathtub scene in Nightfall, when he insists that his desperate attempts to save Bonnie were all "whim." I don't think everybody quite got it, that Damon was just trying to save face here, and that the "whim" was nonsense. Certainly Stefan didn't get it.
But, you know, sometime I'll make up a list of Damon's funniest lines. A lot, though, stay in his own head, like his attempts to find a way to remember Matt's name and comes up with "Mutt."

The reason Damon has been more in the forefront lately is that the last trilogy was about him. I wanted to call it "Damon" (the whole trilogy) so people would know that. And you have to admit, in the books that came before, I had never really told anything from Damon's point of view.
I have been reading your books since I was 13, and I am getting ready to turn 31 next month. I even won signed copies of the Forbidden Game trilogy when they were first published. I wanted to know if you would ever do more with the secret circle series, my favorite series? Do you have any plans for rashka and rashel in strange fate? I keep hoping I don't die or something before it comes out as reading it is on my Bucket

And as a Stefan and Elena fan, you should be very happy with future books. I always wanted the triangle to be a real triangle, making it hard for Elena to choose, and, remember that the first four books are where Stefan's character is forged, but that he was due for a Power-Up in The Hunters.
we didnt see anything more about him, Stefan´s story is around Elena and his love for her, but i think he deserves more storyline. for example :
Damon, his story is amazing, is divided between his love story with elena, his journey for his humanity, his lovely connection with Bonnie, wanted or not he is part of the gang too fighting to save the town, he is always in the middle of something, you know, his charming personality always gets him into some mess, he always has something to tell!
Elena of course she is the main character and she has the most complicated storyline, she has to save the town and also she is love with two wonderful vampires, we saw her growing with each book.
Bonnie her psychic powers are growing with each book and her powers plus her naive and inocence personality always gets her in troubles too, she is fighting for the town, and what about her love for Damon, i am so curious about them.
Matt he is part of the gang, but also he has his problems with caroline and the babies, and i am sure he cant forget his love for elena.
i love all the characters and i understand if Lisa wanted Elena and Damon together,actual ly i dont mind, i am sad because i feel that in some point of the story stefan was forgotten. and now i won´t see his real story.
Anyway, I adore Stefan. And Damon. That's the point of the series; it must be a real triangle.
But you're right; his story - along with Meredith's - really needs to be expended, or whatever you want to call it.

I have a question about a quote from Midnight I was hoping you might answer because there has been some debate about it.

Some people think that the part about Elena needing no more proof of his feelings for "her" was about Bonnie, that Damon saving Bonnie's life indicated he loved Bonnie.
Some, like myself, felt that Elena was referring to herself.

I really love the way you wrote Damon and Elena scenes through out the books. Damon and Elena connection is so deep & powerful and even though Elena is with Stefan I felt like Damon is the one who she truly belonged with who truly got her. And Elena got Damon in a way that nobody else did. Elena really understood Damon. Thank you for writing the Vampire Diaries books and most of all thank you for making Damon & Elena the best couple ever. Love you LJ Smith :)

I noticed while reading the comment board that lj smith is going to write adult books. I heard the name wanderer? Can somebody please tell me a list of her adult books just so i can check them out. Im only 12 but ....... im reading pride and prejudice so i'd say im pretty developed in reading for my age.

I just wanted to say how much I love your books and that I grew up with The Vampire Diaries and the Night World series being such an important part of my life. They've also been a really significant reason why I love reading so much. I really loved The vampire Diaries:the Return series mainly because we got so many beautiful Damon and Elena moments. I reread Damon's death 5 times because you can feel Damon's and Elena's
love and those 5 times I was crying.

On the surface Damon is cold, dark, ruthless, but deep down inside Damon he loves passionately and is really a good person he just needed to believe it for himself. That was the moment that sold me as a Damon & Elena fan for life. And seeing Elena push Damon and truly believe in him throughout the series was the best thing ever.
Even though Elena is with Stefan I truly believed one day Elena would realize she's meant to be with Damon. Just like Damon always said because Damon is a fatalist once he believes in something he never gives up on it.
However even with all those odds against Damon and Elena Delena fans still believed strongly in Damon and Elena ending up together and I think that speaks volumes.
I will always love Damon and Elena they made me believe that anything is possible even if its a 1% chance of happening.
So thank you so much LJ Smith for showing that Damon & Elena did stand a chance however small it was. Believe it or not just Damon & Elena storyline alone showed that once two people are meant to be together it doesn't matter what anyone else says or thinks all that matters is the love they share and you LJ Smith and the way you wrote Damon & Elena love story thought me that.Damon and Elena will always be my favorite. Even though Delena has come to and end--
