I just read her blog about how that "Ghostwriter" is now writing vamp diaries. I'm so angry! Being a writer myself, it makes me very upset that they stole her story from her! :cry:

You can't plagiarize something that you own the rights to. Smith does not own the rights, Harper/Alloy does (I believe). So, they can do whatever they want; the characters/stor y etc. belong to them.

This has me nearly in tears. I fought tooth and nail to write those bookl--I fought until my agent wouldn't support me, when she said I would be sued and she wouldn't fight with me anymore, and I WROTE Phantom. But instead of edits what I got back was a letter to Clare the ghostwriterm tellling her to completely change my book. I HAD NO CHOICE IN THE MATTER. I was decieved by Alloy and got no support from Harper.

I may just write adult or literary books now and disappear from fandom. Isn't there anybody who will take this message to fans who are slanging me? I can't even get on the frickin' newsgroups.

Now you are interesting, Sofia. Such passion and emotion devoted to all of these pathetic childish antics against LJ Smith.

I find it strange that Alloy publishing fired her from the project, and even stranger that someone reported me on facebook for being "fake", though my social security card and driver's license cleared that right up.
As I have told her before (or maybe her agent) over myspace when it wasn't a dead website; I have grown interested in her books because of the irony of my name. Irony, people. I don't believe in coincidence. I've even taken slack by brave (cowardly) former friends who accused me of trying to be a vampire because of the exact same name but don't have the gall to face me man to man. When the timeframe around the publishing of the ghost-written book arrives; I'm ready and willing to lead a crowd if that's what must be done.

U sound very mature 4 ur age.
Yes many of L.J fan's are older, [20+] because I was eleven when I was reading L.J books and she had written them a few years earlier, therefore I have been waiting over 10 yr's for strange fate and happily will another.
But they are some teenage fan's ou there, go through the guset books and u will find them or wait for a response.
u write well, keep writing

Hi Sofia,

I do hope the books are not aimed just at teenagers. Im 24 and i love the books and get so much enjoyment out of reading them. Its a different reality to me and the world that Lisa has created is inspirational to all women (young and a bit older). I can image myself reading these kinds of books for years to come. They give people hope and beieve in the kind of love and connections we dont see in the world. My favourite is the Night world series and i hope with all my heart i wont have to wait another 10 years and Lisa writes some more to the series. I would really love to revisit the characters that Lisa makes us fall in love with and connect with

I agree, anyone can read LJ books but her characters are always 16-18 that's why I or said age-group thing as she writes YA genre
but I'm 25 and re-read FG today and YES NW was the best series, even better than VD

Oh no, how is Secret Circle last? I feel very sad right now. I just adore those books so much! It's possibly because Cassie reminds me of me, no I'm not a witch (unfortunately) but I used to be shy and timid and one day I miraculously broke out of my shell, just like Cassie. And the plot and characters...it melts my heart in the best way possible. Of course everyone has a right to there opinion. I agree that Night World is the best of the best though. But I truly think all of L.J.'s books are equally good!

If I were to tell someone the order I liked them in it would come out a little something like this, "Night World, and then, no wait...Secret Circle first and then Dark Vision. Wait, I changed my mind! The best is Vampire Diaries...I think, maybe..."

There is just no way possible for me to rank them because they are all just so wonderful. I call it "delicious reading" ;-)

I first bought the first 2 books of Vampire Diaries for ever ago, I mean I had it so long and never read it that the spine is no longer black. Anyways I finally read it cause I am done with the spring semester of college and I had some free time, and I'm sad to say I can't believe it took me this long to read this series! School ended may 9th and I am already on the 5th book and almost done. It's great and I like all the characters and plots!

LJ has been forced to stop writing VD this is unacceptable, how would you feel if your [life's work] is stolen.
Writing is personal, your characters are your life and fan's your children, so how can a mother hurt them?
She LJ can't say boycott the books - she will face legal scrutiny but she can tell her pain which she has in guestbook 13.
PLEASE BOYCOTT THE NEW VD BOOKS AND LJ CAN BE BOUGHT BACK TO WRITE THEM.
Im lucky that it is VD not nightworld or forbidden game or even dark visions as if these were written by another author i would possibly consider self harm BUT I am NOT Advocating this I am just expressing my feelings with fellow fan's. AS Im In love with all those other characters that gave my life meaning in the most awful phase of my teenage years.

Did anyone else read the most recent blog entry? Did anyone else feel their heart beat painfully?

I find life to be such an unwelcoming place sometimes, the things people can do to other people are so unspeakable. I just can't comprehend the things people do. There is so much evil going on, but maybe us fans can make L.J. feel better.

I don't mean rallying against alloy or anything like that. I mean just by saying, "Thanks for changing my life." or maybe, "Thanks for inspiring me." and last but not least, "Thanks for being my hero."

She is my hero because even though this has happened to her, she is still writing. She is working on strange fate as we speak. I can't put into words how much that means to me. She keeps on going, and so I will too.

Hi Christina, (That feels a little like talking to myself, lol)

I read the blog and I agree with everything you said. This whole situation just keeps getting worse and worse. I don’t even think the ghostwriter issue is what is bothering me the most. (Don’t get me wrong. I think it is appalling.) The part that is breaking my heart is the pain that it is causing L.J. I can feel her pain through her words. I think it is a great idea for us fans to pull together and try to ease that pain.

L.J. is my hero because everything she does she does it from her heart and is not just a projection of what other people want her to be.

Well, I was reading the other guest books and she mentioned--I think!--that she was juggling a few different projects, (first and foremost finishing Strange Fate) including a new one, Eternity?, and the sequel to the Forbidden Game. So it'll probably be a while, at least a couple years, I think. Or I could be completely wrong. Hahaha.

I hope that the powers that be find the folly in their decisions when it comes to TVD. I hope that they end up having to eat a LOT of crow for taking the series from you in such a horrid fashion. I think it is disgusting that the Vampire Diaries Series has been taken from Lj Smith and passed on to a ghostwriter. She has created a series which I love reading about and it wont be the same without her words on the page.
I love the show and I love how the show is the same but different from the books.
I think this just plain sucks.
How dare you do this to Lj's Fans.

while i love the vampire diaries original books, new books, and tv show. i love the secret circle book much more i think there amazing when i got the second half of the set i real the whole thing in one day this coming from someone who has never been a big reader is a huge compliment. i hope the tv show will be just as great and the vampire diaries but i would really love a new set of secret circle books. that would be amazing! love your work and when im done midnight ill pick which series to read next.

new VD is awful - im learning creative writing and after viewing a passage [ i do not read vd witout lj, true fan] now know why ghost writers are people who never make it writing unlike lj as "she walked on the crumbling grass or the grass crumbled under her foot" - is truly awful writing

Please inform each other 2 of VD issue and try 2 boycot ... 4 LJ - remeber she can't come straight out with her dissaproval - legal reasons but do read GB 12 & 13, one of them she has shared her pain

I can't begin to imagine how agonizing it is to have your own books and characters stolen off you. I'm writing a book myself right now, so I can kind of imagine what you're going through. I can't believe that the hunters book is out already. I didn't even know, cause I refuse to read anything vampire diaries related that isn't your work. I think If I read it and Damon wasn't in it I would cry. Or break something. Anyway, keep pushing on, and I look forward to all of your other books that I haven't read (I discovered VD first) xxx

Words start to appear on the page as my hand scribbles letter after letter. My fingers are scrunched up against the pencil, creating a cramp; I keep going, unable to stop. Realizing a mistake I flip my pencil upside-down to erase. Completing my sentence, I set my writings on my neon blue desk. My eyes skim the paragraphs.
Call me whatever you shall, but when I write, the future is laid out from my hands. Yeah, I know, most people who can tell the future have visions or draw pictures. I can’t do that because I just can’t. I’m the only person who knows about it; no way would want to live in a town as small as mine and have a supposed-to-be- secret-but-not- anymore-secret. No way. Things get around too fast; although, I did tell my best friend, Emma Rights. She didn’t seem surprised and she told me so.

[I was inspired by LJ to write. Tell me if it is good, please.]

No, we write because it's what we need, as humans, to survive. It is the raw power that drives all human beings to keep going in life. It's romance, beauty, truth, poetry, and love. It's what we live for.

I may seriously lose my mind. I can't tell the ghostwriter anything. First, I'm not allowed to. Second, if I were allowed to speak to her, what would I say? I know who she is. I knew her before I chose her as the person to carry the series on after I had written either three or six more books, whatever it took to get to the endgame. When I first started writing the new Vampire Diaries trilogy that most people have read by now: Nightfall, Shadow Souls, and Midnight, she was my editor at Harper. Now, Alloy and whoever is making the decisions at HarperTeen have decided that not only may I not make suggestions to the ghostwriter, but that I may not see the manuscript until it is finished and I may not comment on it (except to empty air) at that point.

From them, I understand it. But this woman had been my editor. We used to write cheery little notes to each other each week The Vampire Diaries was on the bestseller list. I used to call her my little bird caroling good news. And I picked her--I offered to make her a Bible of how the characters should be when I'd finished writing the books. But when the books were taken from me and given to her, she never emailed or called me to say, "Lisa, I'm sorry things turned out this way." Had our positions been reversed . . . well, as she knows better than anyone, I would have done more than email or call.

;-) Every now and again I feel eyes on me and glance up. My head turns, searching the room. No one seems to be paying any attention to me so I keep to my work. The word soon comes out as planned. When I am done I go to the shelf where Mrs. Parker kept the sanders. The first few of the pads are grinded so badly that they needed to be change. The third sander had a new pad and hadn’t been used. Just my luck. After finding a place where I could put the wood in a visor, I lock it in and start to sand. The edges smooth over and become lighter. The space between the ‘V’ and ‘O’ are too small for me to run the sander over. I get a piece of sand paper from a bucket and bend it in half. It fits perfectly in the crevasses; I scrub hard, for if I don’t it won’t work.
The sun shines through the windows. It shows where the dust flies and fills the air. I breathe it in and sigh. The smell of sawdust is just semimetal, at least to me.

Not anything really important but did you know that sometimes you could see your books on Glee whenever the characters go in the library(it was in this years season finale toward the end). I have spotted The Vampire Diaries at least in two episodes(at first I thought I was just seeing things but then I looked back and the book spine clearly said The Vampire Diaries) I just thought that it is funny that I always spot your books in the show whenever they pass by it. I read it so much I could tell it just by looking at the book spine alone even if only for a brief second, seeing your books on the show just completely makes me forget about the show itself because I find it so amazing that I could be able to tell that those are your books.

I love of her books. She is and always will be and AMAZING Author. I'm not sure about the nasty things that some of these so called "fans" are saying about her because I don't want to know. I know in my heart what kind of person L.J is. She shows us how wonderful she is through her books and through this site. There are writers that won't interact with their fans but L.J DOES. She holds contests for us to get us that much closer to her and her books. She allows us to have guests books where we can speak our minds and show our appreciation. & she writes back.
I look up to L.J. I admire her for being as strong as she has been through all of this. I really don't want you to stop writing Young Readers books but if that is something that you feel like you have to do, I will stand by you & will keep on reading what you write. Thank you for bringing all these characters into my life.

L.J. your fans support you and the ones that are giving you issues with not writing Vampire Diaries are just upset and are taking it out on you. They think that the writer is in charge all the time and in reality that is not always the case. Keep your chin up and write what you feel like writing. I am a girl from Norway and I really love L.J. Smith's books. I have read The Vampire Diaries, the Forbidden Game and the Night World. I'm planning to read Dark vision and Secret Circle as well, but I just have to order them on the internet first... (there are very few L.J. Smith books in my local bookstore...).

I wonder which books the ghostwriter wrote. I didn't understand by reading the blog. I am really looking forward to The Hunters, but I didn't understand if she or the ghostwriter wrote them.

I hope somebody will answer me :-)

The Hunters will be written by the ghostwriter. The first book in that trilogy, Phantom, was written based on the plan L. J. Smith had for it, but the ghostwriter actually wrote it and may have changed a lot of the original plot, to my understanding. The first seven books in the series, however, were all L. J. Smith's work. I hope this helped :)

I was so excited to find out tonight on Amazon that a new Vampire Diaries was coming out. Then came to your site to find out what it would be about as no description was given on Amazon. My heart drop when I read your blog. All publishers care about is money it seems. They don't care about the fans who love the characters. I immediately went and took the book off my wishlist from Amazon. Why read Vampire Diaries if you didn't write it. I want to cry because now your characters are going to be ruined. Yes I like the tv show but the tv show and your books are two different things.

Yay on The Secret Circle being made into a tv show. I will definitely check that out. Lets just hope that the same thing does not happen with you Secret Circle novella.

I've read a couple of the comments on this page and I really really hope that you don't give up on teenage fiction. I'm going to be 23 this year and I still read your Night World books on a regular basis- it got so bad once that I could quote from Huntress! I can't believe that your agent didn't support you- but your fans always will, that much I can say! I can't wait for the final book of the Night World series to come out and intend on passing them down to my own children when they are old enough!!!

Hi, along with many other people i have met, i am a heavy Forbidden Game fan. I read it when i was 12 years old, and 5 years later i'm still totally in love with it. I'm currently in a challenge with my friend to convince as many people as possible to read the trilogy within 6 months as we can and see who can get more people to become fans of it. I love this trilogy more than any other books in the world, please write a sequel!!!

Lisa Jane Smith, I've finished all three of the Night World omnibuses, and all I have to say is WOW. There are no words that can quite sum up my feelings towards your Night World series. It's like I'm addicted in a healthy way. I particularly loved Daughters of Darkness, The Chosen, Soulmate, Huntress, Black Dawn, and Witchlight. It's just crazy how powerful those books are. And while I dislike picking favorites, Night World now stands out to me before Dark Visions, my previous favorite book. Needless to say, I'm VERY excited for Strange Fate and to add it to my bookshelf. I have the PDFs for your Night World side stories on my Kindle, so as soon as I'm done with The Secret Circle, I'll be sure to hop onto those too. Thank you for keeping me into reading. Even when I sway, I always seem to come back to your books.
