Biography
L. J. (Lisa Jane) Smith is the New York Times #1 Bestselling author of The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, The Forbidden Game, Dark Visions, and the Wildworld and Night World series.
Hello, and welcome to my website. I have written over two dozen books for children and young adults, and have enjoyed writing every one of them. My favorite people are my readers, each of whom I cherish with deep and lasting affection. I love to hear from all of you. This email address is being protected from spambots. I was born in Florida, but my father, who had been a football star at Clemson University, decided to go into business with a partner that required him to move several times and I ended up in southern California when I was a toddler, and I lived there until I moved to the Bay Area of northern California.
I think the truth is that always knew that I would be a writer. That is, I was making up stories and writing "poetry" (very bad) all the time in my head ever since I can remembe
r. I would tell poems to my mother before I learned how to read (I didn't learn until I was in kinergarten) and sometimes she would write them down. That's how I know about them. I was always making up stories and then acting them out with the kids on the block. With my girlfriends I played "princesses" and with my boy friends I played (no, not "doctor") but "space explorer." I was young just around the time of the first manned landing on the moon and "space explorer" was very exciting.
I grew up and although I continued to read children's books, I began to read adult books by the time I was eight or so. But I always believed in one thing, that I was going to find MAGIC. Real, true, flying carpet type magic. My favorite books were the ones about magic. I was sure that I would find it by the time I was nine, because nine was three times three, a very magical number. And when I lived through being nine and didn't find it I was sure that by the time I was twelve (three times three plus three) I would surely find it.

But, sadly, I didn't find it by the time I turned twelve. And then I realized that if I wasn't going to just find magic, I would have to make it for myself. And so I started writing short stories, poetry, everything you can name, all about fantasy and magic and science fiction. I began my first book in high school and I finished it in college. I called The Night of the Solstice and I found an agent in a friend of the woman who typed up my manuscript. This agent only sold books as a sort of hobby, and was not very knowledgeable about contracts, but she sent my book to MacMillan Publishers Ltd., where it was (after a rewrite) taken on and published. It got stellar reviews but due to a hideous cover and being mis-categorized as a middle-grade book rather than YA, it didn’t sell well until after The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening came out. Then it became a bestseller, much to my surprise.
I live in the Bay Area of California, with a backyard that is full of flowers, which I adore, especially with many different shades of roses.
I love to visit my friend Toni's little cabin in the Point Reyes National Seashore area, which has lots of trees, lots of animals, lots of beaches to walk on, and lots of places to hike. Once, while hiking, I saw a snow-white buck which allowed me to follow it nearly half a mile.
A militant optimist, I’m also part of the Velociraptor Sisterhood (a fancy way of saying that I like to read, write and discuss books with strong female characters). I have traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East. The two countries I love to visit most are Great Britain, with its historic monuments and amazing country landscapes, and Japan, with its bustling urban life and exquisite mountain scenery.

The V.D's and secret circle was taken away from her.
Since stefans diaries has come into play due to show - this was never given or taken from Lisa.
Lisa herself has said she did not have the to write them in the time required for publishing purposes.
There are no bad reasons or foul play here - V.D & Secret Circle is a different matter.
Please boycott Phantom
lol
The books say Created By L.J.Smith
so it is based on her works, not written by her!
It is alittle mis-leading, not completely dishonest.
Hope That Helps
i totally think that the person is dishonest.
I share ur sentiment, only said what i did in a fact manner. I HATE ALLOY!
THEY DROPPED A NEW YORK BEST SELLER WRITER, WHO HAD THIS TITLE IN THE 90's AND PRESENTLY - WHAT BIG IDIOTS
RECIPE FOR DISASTER!

I would love to have you join the Forum and share your thoughts with other fans. We need fans like you to encourage LJ to keep writing and rally the fan base to stay true to LJ. This is a personal invitation.
But...Is there any chance that she will post a TSC story in this site.?
More power to you Lisa Jane Smith..we, your faithful readers, will forever support and love you..
NO LISA WONT ADD HER STORY OF SECRET CIRCLE HERE AS SHE WILL GET SUED, IF SHE TRIED!
That are her words when asked this Q prior
SORRY - IM HEARTBROKEN 2
I KNOW SHE CAN CONTINUE TO WRITE V.D & S.C BUT I ALSO KNOW IT NEVER WILL BE POSSIBLE DUE TO LESLIE MORGANSTEIN!
HIS NAME IS IN V.D SHOW's CREDITS
When I first thought of getting into the TV series, I had to brace myself. I literally forbid myself to watch the show when The Vampire Diaries hit the TV scene. I didn't want to see the story I LOVED get . . . mistranslated. With books, you do the imagination. With TV/movies, you're presented with the imagination. Two seaons later, I'm watching all the episodes and LOVE IT!!!
What I finally did was I told myself, don't expect the book. Expect some . . . "essance" of the book, but it will NOT, nor EVER will be the book.
The TV series surpise me, except Secret Circle. I'm barely hanging on to it I'm so disappointed with it.
All of her other series are with a different publisher and have different contracts so they will not suffer the same fate.
Now that the 2nd and 3rd phantom series are to be written by a ghost writer, who ever that is, btw super disapointin I think that a little part of me died inside. I seriously want to cry I feel like it's only worth reading if LJ writes it. I'm so scared to read teh ones written by this other guy. It brings me, and my friend to tears to hear our most favorite book series is...idk im so mad! I say we boycott the books by this ghost writer guy and not buy them! i know it's tempting, but of you really love LJ you'll do it.PS, im so sorry i wrote so much. I'm an espiring writer every time i write a novle i never finish, longest i got to was 52 pgs!could someone give me some advice. one day i wana be like lj. i hope i dont get the same phate though. Any advise
I think ur already part of the forum, as a member?
If not, jump on now & ask ur 13 well tasted friends to join the fun 2.
On the F.A.Q. page it lists Forbidden Game as one of the sequels she was working on. Theres also a note on it by admin saying the information will be updated soon, so hopefully we wont have too long to wait
P.s.
Your an amazing writer I read almost every series you have.

It must be devastating for L.J. and my heart goes out to her that the awesome world and amazing characters that she has created and gifted to us, have been ripped away from her in this way.
Please keep writing L.J. and don't lose faith.
We, your fans, know your writing and love how you pull us all so deeply into the worlds you create.
In my opinion, it is certainly not worth reading books written by a fake.
Personally I would rather have no ending to the stories than have one written by someone that didn't create them but would have loved the chance to continue reading on with L.J. as the author. That's why I am so, so disappointed.

Maybe someone somewhere is handing out awards for the stupidest decision. If so, Alloy has my vote.
Have you joined the Forum? We are having lots of fun, interesting conversations over there. It is also a great place to find the latest info. on upcoming books.

i want LJ back :(
I'm really, really looking forward to her new continuation of the Night World Series (Strange Fate), and the possibility of the continuation of the Forbidden Game! Yay! I can't wait for new series and such, but will not pay attention to Alloy and their traitorous books.
Oh and I hope L.J. will get better, I heard she's really sick :(
TY bye
On a happier note, you can move past The Vampire Diaries and start enjoying Lisa's other amazing books. Check out the Book list http://www.ljanesmith.net/www/author/booklist for all the books she has written. My favorites are Night World. Since you are a Damon fan, I know you will love Night World characters like Ash, Morgead, and Delos.
Thanks
All of L. J. Smith's other amazing series have a different type of contract and will never fall into the hands of a ghostwriter.
I hope this cleared up your confusion.
Hello! I am a huge fan of "The Vampire Diaries" & have been for quite some time since I have all the books & the first 2 seasons on DVD but not only that but I am a bit confused to the fact that I am now currently reading the trilogies of "The Vampire Diaries - The Hunters" series but a question comes to mind which is the following - Is the next book going to be called "Destiny Rising"?. The reason why I have asked is because I have a feeling that, that is going to be the title of the next book after "Moonsong?. Please do let me know.
Sincerely,
Adriana
But I sure do hope that L.J will keep writing books as she is an amazing author, one of my absolute favourites, and whatever happens I sure do hope that HarperTeen and Alloy Entertainment Inc. will come to their senses and realise that we love the books because of her and her writing :)
Keep writing, L.J, because you are really very good at it! :)
I think it really sucks that they did that to LJ!!
Those publishers in their big companies think they can get away with anything...
Like taking away a woman's own creation...
I've read Phantom, and I could tell from page 1 that it wasn't written by LJ herself. The book lacked the spirit and love LJ puts in hers and I really think it's a shame and a waste to let some ghostwriter attempt to take over!!
We love you, LJ and we'll stand by you until the very end
I dont know why she isnt righting the books anymore, I just read the comments... and OMIGOD life isnt the same anymore
Sincerely,
Elayna
In my eyes any VD not written by L.J Smith is not worth reading or buying. She created the VD world and charactors. They should remain hers. Any book written after the ones she has written are not worth a second glance. L.J Smith is the ONLY author of Vampire Diaries and Secret Circle!!!!!
but can u at least tell a little bit more information out of urself

There is lots of interesting info.
I am a very new fan of yours (literally, I just started and finished The Secret Circle trilogy yesterday), & I love your work and writing style! I was amazed to find that you also wrote other popular series & I can't wait to start them as well.
After finishing TSC trilogy, I was going to continue but noticed that it was credited differently and the style & voice of the story was completely different so I didn't end up purchasing it. After finding your site, it made sense.
I know that you are under contract to cease writing your own series (which I think is ludicrous) or able to comment on any further works. However, how do you feel about ghostwriters in general? What advice would you give your fans about continuation of a series that the original author did not write? Would you continue to read, or would that be akin to betraying the original author? *Note, this question has nothing to do with any of your previous works & is purely hypothetical*
Lisa has asked her fans not to boycott the ghostwritten books. I believe that is very classy of her. However, I cannot and will not honor that request. It would mean going against everything I stand for. So personally, I have been and will continue to boycott all ghostwritten books in The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle series. What you do is your choice.
If you are wondering what series to read next, I highly recommend Night World. They are my favorites. They have vampires, witches, shapeshifters, etc. You should also join the Forum. It is a wonderful place to interact with other fans and keep up to date on all the books Lisa has planned.
I don't know if this has already come up or not but I'd like to make a suggestion. Is there any way to maybe create a petition directed specifically to Alloy, to review the contract with Lisa and give her back the rights to TVD and TSC? I mean, would it help at all if it were to be done?
Thanks,
Suzanne
Something positive everyone can do is read Lisa's other series and anything new she writes. My favorites are Night World.
I of course feel the same way you all do. I just finished watching the TV series and am gutted that it's been cancelled. I will definitely buy her books and not the ones written by ghost writers, as well as spread the word!
I've also shared the websites for the petitions for a second season of TSC :)
Thanks!
Fortunately, we will be able to enjoy more of Lisa's writing in the new books she is working on. They are completely unrelated to The Vampire Diaries or The Secret Circle.

I would support you ! Come to France when you want, yours fans will be happy to welcome you !
I just wanted to clarify that the only series that L.J. Smith is not allowed to write are The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle. She can continue to write any of her other series that she chooses to as well as new books.

please try to whrite another vampire diaries book
your books are the best
I used to hate reading so my mom would try and get me books that would perk my interest..so a few years ago she bought my the first night world book but I never read it. One Christmas I got the kindle as a present so I thought I would maybe look into books that would make me want to read. I absolutely fell in love with your Night World series and finished them maybe two years ago. Just a few months ago..I was cleaning out closets and found the book my mom bought me. My jaw hit the floor and I just started laughing to myself. Guess parents really do know best :) thanks for the great writing and amazing worlds you create that I get sucked into :)...Not literally like The Forbidden Game :)
I am hoping to be as good as a writer as she is. L.J. Is my Idol and I can not
THANK YOU L.J. SMITH
I was going to so I could finish my collection.
Wait what about the tv cover books
Why are the taking Secret Circle away from her though? That's insane!
Again just wondering
~Ms Lane (p.s love the first books :)
There was an interview that used to be linked on this site and I can't seem to find the link through this site atm either. Here is the link to the article by Salt Lake Magazine "The Vampire Diaries creator L.J. Smith on writing and losing the series" http://saltlakemagazine.com/blog/2012/10/27/qa-the-vampire-diaries-creator-lj-smith/
Thank you!
Wish it would get some more interest. It isn't as "romantic" as vampires and such, but it is really interesting!
The only Secret Circle books written by Lisa are the first three. They are usually packaged as two books with half of the Captive appearing in each omnibus. Here's the titles.
The Initiation
The Captive
The Power
Here is a complete list of all the books Lisa has written and a few she has planned.

I'm angry how can anyone just think that Lisa must stop writing?!Hello if Lisa doesn't write the first 7 books, the show would not exist. They need to be thankful for already written and left to write. TV show will not be the same without books Lisa! How they expect to have the same ratings? As fans of L.J.Smith we should do something. We can't just let them stopping Lisa's writing one by one!It is the ungrateful and terrible by them.I'm so angry!
Mrs.Lisa I love your books. And I will continue reading everything you publish. You're my favorite author and your way of writing is amazing!continu e on this way.Love ya!
And you who have took away the right to continue to write her books should be ashamed!Think if Lisa have no idea inspiration to start writing you today will have nothing to play the TV!For big ratings she deserves big thank.
I have really enjoyed the books but feel very let done over Strange Fate
Do you have a release date yet please
I am certain you have been consistently bombarded with questions about the release of Strange Fate.
I read every single one of your books (originals ofcourse) when i was a teen girl. I have been patiently waiting 20 years for the release of the 10th Nightworld book..Strange Fate (I realize writing is an art and requires alot of work).
I now have a daughter whom I have handed my collection to, so she could enjoy your work as much as I did while growing up. I am very curious to know if there is any update regarding the potential release date for the last book? It is my hope I get to finish reading the saga within my lifetime. I wanted to also extend my appreciation for your literary contribution thus far! It is wonderful to see young people interested in reading your work!
Best,
E.
