The Night World
The Night World series, another bestseller both in the 1990s and now, has been put out in 3 omnibus volumes, each containing 3 books from the original series of 9. They do have Volume Numbers. The series is incomplete because I am writing the last book (or at least a milestone in the series) Volume 10, Strange Fate. I'm not sure when it will come out, but all I do every day is write!
Night World: Secret Vampire, Pocket Books, 1996
The Night World isn’t a place. It’s the world of vampires, witches, and shapeshifters who live in the human world—by their own rules. And the first two rules of the Night World are simple: 1) Never tell any human about its existence, and 2) Never fall in love with a human. Spunky, sassy Poppy has always been in the best of health. Until today, when she discovers that she has a rare disease, and only weeks to live. James, her best friend, and the coolest boy at school, is confronted with a frightening decision. He can make Poppy a vampire like him, or he can let her die. But telling Poppy about the Night World is almost as dangerous as letting her die of a human disease, for he’s broken both of the Night World’s rules, and fallen in love with her.
Night World: Daughters of Darkness, Pocket Books, 1996
Mary-Lynnette, seventeen, loves to watch the stars from her Oregon backyard. Then one day, she thinks she’s witnessed a murder through her telescope. She’s wrong: it’s only three vampire sisters burying their mysteriously-killed aunt. Mary-Lynnette, by the laws of the Night World, must become kin to the sisters or be sentenced to death: a sentence that seems to be sealed when their brother Ash appears. Gorgeous, lazy Ash has never dreamed that he could fall in love with a human, but it seems that Mary-Lynnette doesn’t want him on any terms because of his lurid vampire past. Can a now-repentant Ash convince Mary-Lynnette to let him atone for his former sins and be his soulmate.
Night World: Spellbinder, Pocket Books, 1996
Thea and Blaise are cousins, and witches, and as different as day and night. They even belong to different witch covens, Circle Twilight, for the not-so-wicked-witches and Circle Midnight for the real hellions. In fact, Granny Harman, the Witch Leader, often compares them to Hellewise and Maya, the sisters who were the mother of all witches and the very first vampire, respectively. But when Thea breaks the laws of the Night World and falls in love with Eric, an ordinary human boy, she has unexpectedly to rely on the whims of Blaise or both she and Eric are doomed. This is the book in which Circle Daybreak debuts.
Night World: Dark Angel, Pocket Books, 1996
Childlike, innocent Gillian Harman is trying to save a baby she hears crying in the woods when, to her own surprise, she dies! Even more surprising is her guide in the afterlife, Gary Fargeon, an “angel” with a great body and a gorgeous face. Returned to life, Gillian listens to her dark angel in all things . . . and soon finds herself anything but childlike and innocent. But things are not what they seem, and even angels can make mistakes. Soon Gillian is on a quest to find out just what deed Gary committed to strand him in the afterlife; and to find out the secret of where she belongs in a world she never knew existed: the Night World.
Night World: The Chosen, Pocket Books, 1997
Rashel Jordan lost her mother to a golden-eyed vampire at the age of five—and just barely saved herself by her wits. She’s grown up to the age of seventeen as a vampire hunter—the best. But when a group of hunters captures Quinn and decides to torture him, Rashel feels something in her soul twist. Left alone with Quinn, she goes along with her mad impulse and allows him to escape. But Quinn, a vampire with one of the darkest reputations in the Night World warns her not to expect him to return the favor. Nevertheless, when Rashel gets herself chosen for a bloodfeast and finds that Quinn is in charge of gathering girls for the dark ceremony! Enemies—and soulmates—what will happen during their final fight?
Night World: Soulmate, Pocket Books, 1997
Sixteen-year-old Hannah goes to a psychologist to understand the meaning of her the notes she keeps finding—in her own handwriting. “Dead before 17,” “He’s coming,” “Watch out.” Only under hypnosis is their cryptic meaning revealed. Hannah is actually an Old Soul, a girl who has been reincarnated many times and can remember her past lives. And in every one of them, the fair-haired stranger appears—and Hannah loves him—and Hannah dies at age16. Meanwhile, the leader of all the vampires of Circle Daybreak, all those who have human soulmates, Lord Thierry, is searching. He’s looking for her—the girl he loved and accidentally killed thousands of year ago. Who will find Hannah first—her vampire soulmate, or Maya, the first of all the vampires who has murdered Hannah a thousand times to keep her from Thierry. And who will Hannah believe when they do find her?
Night World: Huntress, Pocket Books 1997
Jez, with flaming red hair and silvery blue eyes, is the epitome of the wild teenage vampire, riding her motorcycle and chasing skinheads through the woods. She and Morgead regularly challenge each other for leadership of the gang, and Jez believes—naturally enough—that the handsome, dark-haired vampire hates her. But suddenly the world changes for Jez. She discovers that she has no right to the Night World, because one of her parents was human. Now Jez has turned into a vampire huntress, and one with a special job: find one of the four Wild Powers who can fight off the Apocalypse, the end of the world. To do so, though, she must challenge her dearest enemy once again for the leadership—knowing that she has only half-vampire Powers.
Night World: Black Dawn, Pocket Books 1998
Maggie is the picture of an ordinary human teenager. Yet when her brother’s lovely girlfriend reports that he has been killed in a mountaineering accident, she knows it is a lie. The chase leads her to discover an entire community of human slaves ruled by vampires in the hollow of a Washington mountain. There also, she finds Delos, the second of the Wild Powers, the vampire ruler of this kingdom where she is a slave—and her soulmate. Her modern clothes cause the other slaves to hail her as a messiah come to bring them freedom. Can even level-headed Maggie deal with her arrogant soulmate and an entire kingdom to be freed?
Night World: Witchlight, Pocket Books 1998
Keller is a seventeen-year-old shapeshifter, a panther, who goes by her last name only. She’s an operative for Circle Daybreak and her mission is simple: find the third Wild Power who can fend off the Apocalypse. Keller does find Iliana, and much more, as well: a dragon in the shape of a human, and her own liege lord Galen. So, she learns: dragons walk the Earth again, even if in disguise. And Iliana is as far from a serious Wild Power as Keller can imagine. A love triangle quickly develops between the handsome princely Galen, the exquisite but bubble-minded Iliana, and Keller—who counts herself out with her favorite saying, “I’m just a grunt.” Life has surprises in store for the cynical, embittered Keller, and her opinions of both Galen and Iliana are in for a radical change.

Night World Series. Simon & Schuster 2008 - 2009
• Night World No. 1 Secret Vampire; Daughters of Darkness; Spellbinder (New York Times Bestseller!) • Night World No. 2 Dark Angel; The Chosen; Soulmate (New York Times Bestseller!) • Night World No. 3 Huntress, Black Dawn, Witchlight (New York Times Bestseller!)
It's primarily about vampires, but it also mixes in werewolves, shapeshifters, witches, etc. In these stories, you'll find vampires who've fallen helplessly in love with their human soulmates--but it's the law that any Night Person who loves a human must be punished by death. If you like Damon, you'll probably also like the vampires Ash Redfern, Quinn, and Morgead--not to mention James Rasmussen of Secret Vampire, the first book in the Night World series.

We are still getting Strange Fate, right? I hope so because I would love to read what happened to my favorite characters! I know it tacks time to get writing just right, but I have to ask because it's been a few years and other then a cover with a preorder on it.
I love these books!!
Has ANYONE got a reply from the author EVER about whether she is finishing this series or are we just left wondering like when a good TV show is axed???!!!
She is working in the last book just have patience I just like you have also been waiting a long time but that will make the book just that much more worth it
Quoting Guest:
they were rereleased not rewritten
sooooooo... It's almost 5 years later Michelle... What happened to her finishing it as you spoke?
Cause it still ain't ready
On a side note, Smith can take her time on the last bit of the series. I'm more than willing to wait :)

I don't know where these sites get their publishing dates but it does not come from Lisa nor her agents.
Hope this cleared that up.
Hope this helps!
Like the countless other fans, I've been anticipating the conclusion to this fantastic series.I am positive it would be yet another best seller. BUT it is already late JULY 2013 and Strange Fate is still not published. WHEN will it finally be out? And why is it not published? THANK YOU in advance for any help.
why
i would so LOVE to see Poppy and James' story come to life!!!
thank you :)
Im only new to the Night World book and Ive fallen in love with them.
I really hope myself and all these fans on here aren't let down if the book doesn't get released.
Im interested in reading more of your books.
There has not been even a tweet from Ms. Smith about Strange Fate for a couple of years.
RIP Strange Fate...
People have a right to their own opinions and to state them thusly. Even if she had stopped writing the book because of what people were saying, she is still in the wrong for not updating her fans.
Writer's block exists, I know, I'm in one now, but if this book was ready for release 2 years ago but was never released, why is it still not written?
The first 9 Night World books were awesome, too bad I won't be able to finish the series.
PS. I'm a huuuge fan
I know that vampire dairies is a big time series. But not finishing the books that you stated is missed up. I do understand that you write everyday. But it should not take you 10 years to finish this series. Tell everybody that you ARE NOT GOING TO FINISH THIS SERIES PLEASE. Because this series is so much better then the vampire dairies. and you can write another forbidden games to. that book was so good.

WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOREVER PLEASE FINISH THE BOOK ......
SOOOONNNNN LIKE THIS YEAR PLEASE!!!!
I had a message on Goodreads from Cassidy, who said that Strange Fate had originally been started before she was born and was I actually going to publish a book called Strange Fate or not. This is my reply to her, and to other readers who are wondering the same thing.
Hi Cassidy,
It's quite true that I started a book called Strange Fate a long time ago, and stopped writing it because I had to help out with my sister Judy's kids when her husband was diagnosed with Stage IV (the worst) malignant melanoma. For around 10 years I couldn't write.
I didn't know what to do. The whole story about Sarah Strange (for whom Strange Fate is named) had become secondary to Brionwy's tale. Finally, I gave in and pulled out every chapter of Brionwy's story from Strange Fate. I then collected the chapters together, gave them an ending and found I had written a new book: The Last Lullaby.
What did I use to fill in the gaps where the Brionwy scary-future chapters were now gone from Strange Fate? I used new stories about what happens after a year to all the soulmate couples in the Night World series. They all had exciting stories to tell: Ash Redford is doing good deeds to make amends so that Mary-Lynnette will accept him as her soulmate. Poppy has developed her telepathy into a weapon against evil. Rashel and Quinn are married, as are Thierry and Hannah. And one lucky couple is expecting a baby.
Sorry to ramble so much. I'm using this question as a chance to update everyone about Strange Fate's status. One thing that delights me is that people are still interested in reading it. That is a great inspiration to me in my writing the end and in revising the beginning of Strange Fate.
So, thank you for caring whether Strange Fate comes out or not. Thank you so much for your kind patience! God make the book worthy of such attention--quickly!
Cheers,
Lisa
sounds like a good idea but it might be boring when its out
I suspect I will be in my 40s (at least) before I see it. I'll be 40 in January 2016.
*sigh* I hope I live long enough to see it. I hope Lisa does too.
Why is it taking so long to complete the final book to this series? It was understood before, when the fans of this series were given the reason of unknown family issues for its incompletion, but how are we to be so understanding now? Almost 2 decades of waiting!? It seems like the fans of the Vampire Diaries are getting their endings, and THEN SOME! Why does it feel like I am never going to see an ending to this series? It frustrating, to say the least. To be truly honest, I am tired of waiting. I can only be fooled so many times. I truly hope that the series means enough to someone for the story to get the ending it deserves. Enough of the fan fiction. I was a true fan of all of L.J. Smith's work, but I can say now that she has lost one of her unimportant fans. I will no longer be waiting for the completion of this series. May whatever holds you back release you, so your "other" fans are no longer put on the back burner.
What I love the MOST about this series is that, not only are the women strong and versatile, they all have unique looks! We have blondes, brunettes, redheads...you name it! For a Hispanic American girl reading fantasy novels, this was the best! I have re-read, and will keep on re-reading them all until the conclusion is available.
I am a grown adult now. Stress comes with lack of patience. So, every year I can only master patience even further!
You do what you have to do, LJ Smith! Patient readers like me will be right in the wings ready to drop down that money for the conclusion.
I understand life happens, and I am sorry for her to have to deal with some of the things people have said on these comments.
LJ Smith does amazing work and I am looking forward to her next book. No matter what series it is in.
Books years ago and waited and waited and have up. Decided to reread the books and am disappointed in the fact that it still hasn't shipped??!??!!? A lot of people have been waiting and reading and still no book?? About to get a refund and get rid of these books..... Waited for al the Shadowhunters Cities book to come out they did read them and bought the next four I strongly recommend her she keeps the books up and out!!!!!!!!!
the new book but it's 2016 and I still can't fiend anything on it.
wtf....
I know its annoying but Im not going to ask when the book will be released, I just want to now os it ever coming out? This book series built my childhood and my love for reading. It is just the one book that has hung over me since I was 10. Next month, I turn 21 and all I want to know for my birthday is can I still hold hope for the book to be released? Or should I just let it go now?
Is she, or is she not, going to finish this series?
I completely understand why it might not be coming out - considering what happened with the Vampire Diaries - but a definitive answer would be much appreciated.
here is a part of it that really made sense
"Now that all the empty chapters have been filled in, I am writing the end of the story of Sarah Strange and her very strange fate. I am actually hoping that Strange Fate will debut in 2014, although it depends a lot on what Simon & Schuster, my publishers want to do. That last condition is an important one. So much depends on Simon & Schuster. So please don't go away thinking, "Hooray! Strange Fate will be out in 2014!" Strange Fate will be out when Simon & Schuster want it to come out."
read the last line,
"Strange Fate will be out when Simon & Schuster want it to come out."
maybe we need to E-mail,write to Simon & Schuster.
I guess we'll just have to keep (or start) emailing & writing and messaging Simon & Schuster. Maybe they had a falling out, thus the book not being released.
goodluck lj smith, hope to read the ending of this series.
Why is this good news?? To maybe get people talking again, and to bring publicity for night world series/strange fate!!! I think it will get released next year. Here are a couple links for collectors edition!
https://m.indigo.ca/product/books/the-night-world-collection-night/9781481498869
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/148149886X/ref=pd_aw_sim_sbs_14_3?ie=UTF8&psc;=1&refRID;=N4NF08Z3NZ0SRSQ626A8&dpPl;=1&dpID;=71KUseAQRBL
The book is done. L.J. Smith herself said so. Its good news, because after a looong wait between books, they want people talking about it again. And perhaps people who havent read it yet, will buy the collectors edition and read it, and release the final book next year. Why re-release all 9 if there is no plans to release the tenth book soon after.
I started reading the books in 2008 I was 4 years old in 1996!
regardless... i wanna read it right MEOW!
I have an idea, and of course it's an idea: L.J. Smith died a few years ago (think V.C. Andrews) except L.J. Smith's family still wanted to make money on her books so they sold them to CW to make tv shows and signed over the rights to VD and SC. The ghost writers are horrible on those, and they didn't sign over the rights to NW; so the family is now trying to string us along so we continue to buy her books and keep checking in to see when it is out. Has anyone actually seen L.J. Smith in years? Does she do author signings? I checked, can't find any. Good luck!
I have been waiting 10 years for this book to come out.
I check here periodically just to see if there is anything new, but I haven't seen an actual update in like, 2 years.
I absolutely hate not finishing stories, the ending is my favorite part, the fact that her fans have been BEGGING for an update with nothing but silence from her speaks volumes.
I scroll down and see tons of stuff from "Michelle" for years, and then silence from her as well. I guess she got tired of defending a writer that doesn't give a damn about her readers.
I will check after my kids graduate high school, perhaps there will be an update then.
About 15 years ago I finished reading the last book of the Night World series. By complete accident I found out about the Vampire Diaries before there was a TV show... After that I discovered True Blood...
So Many Years Later, the vampires diaries have been done for a while now, as with True Blood. Several years ago Stephen King finished his Dark Tower series, and there was even a movie released last year.
Twilight came and went, Dracula Untold became a thing... in May Xbox should be releasing the video game Vampyr...
And all this time later, I'm still waiting on Strange Fate. I came here, hoping to find an update... but now I've finally given up hope. If I'm proven wrong, that would be amazing, but I no longer expect to ever see more than the preview to Strange Fate, unless someone else decided to buy the copyrights and finish it themselves...
L.J. Smith, I want to thank you for your work and I wish you all the best because your writing really helped me get through to where I am today.
I apologise if this comes off as rude or disrespectful, but 20+ years? Really? I'm sorry for what she went through and good for her for overcoming it... but... does she hate her fans that much? Do we mean nothing to her?
It would be fine if she were honest. All we ask for is a little bit of respect lol
Presuming the "additions" to Vampire Diaries were written by Ms. Smith herself and not a ghostwriter, I'd say the NW series is best left unfinished as her writing style has changed too much to keep the feel the same not to mention the major time lapse. Or perhaps the publisher has the file setup with variable names to update technology/pop culture references to autofill as per publication year ("Poppy wearily climbed into the Uber that James had sent for her while Phil shook his iPhone X with seething rage.").
But hey, maybe she'll prove us all wrong and write the book after all? I'll check back in 2028 but I most definitely wouldn't hold my breath for SF to be out in this lifetime.
Today is May 7th, 2018 and Strange Fate isn't coming but I don't believe this is Smith's choice. I don't believe she is to blame. I can't imagine an author choosing not to complete their story. I guess we'll never know for sure...
after looking at it more, I am almost certain it is a ghost writer. But with as long as we have waited I do not think I care like I usually would. At least it could be some kind of end to the series. (even a temporary one is better than nothing)
