How do you feel about the Vampire Diaries TV show?
I think it is a brilliant story, brilliantly written, beautifully acted, with terrific direction, cinematography, and music. I couldn’t improve it (except perhaps to image Nina blond and put Meredith back, and a few other things). Of course, I still wish that someone as talented as Kevin Williamson would come along and tell the story the way it is told in the books, but that doesn’t dull my appreciation of the version that is out. Will there be more delicious Delena moments in Midnight?
Shadow Souls is the book I have enjoyed writing the most since the original Vampire Diaries book, The Awakening. I didn't worry about going into a different dimension and crossing the boundary between "urban fantasy" and "high fantasy." I just followed my heart and wrote.
And I can't deny that there is a strong chemistry between Damon and Elena. But this is, after all, a love triangle, with Stefan at the other point. And with Stefan back, Elena's guilt is enormous. I think that I may have gone with my own personal feelings a little too far in Shadow Souls--and now poor Damon is racked with human emotions and reactions to Elena. Anyway, I hope that the Delena squad understands that, well, those problems may make Damon end up doing things that he otherwise wouldn't do. Besides, Damon is the Bad Boy of the Vampire Diaries. He has to do some naughty things in order to keep his mind at ease.
Anyway, brace yourself for Midnight—and keep Shadow Souls on hand to read if you get worried, and be prepared for a wild ride. I like your strong female characters. Why do you write about them?
Because I want to create role models for teenage (and even younger) girls who read my books. If you look at the books, just about every heroine has a future career or goal in mind (even fickle Elena Gilbert is determined to one day return to the Dark Dimension and help free the slaves). Some of my characters, like Rashel Jordan of The Chosen, and Jez Redfern of Huntress (both from the Night World series) are already immersed in their careers as vampire-hunters. Poppy North (also Night World, as are the next few girls) has an ambition to travel the world, and Mary-Lynnette Carter wants to become an astronomer. Hannah Storm wants to be a paleontologist (although these days she’s probably got her hands full helping to run Circle Daybreak.)
Some of my characters don’t start out as strong girls. They start out as shy, introverted or gentle girls, like Cassie Blake of The Secret Circle, or Jenny Thornton of The Forbidden Game. Then the story is about how they become stronger, through their terrifying experiences and their concern for other people. Strange Fate has this kind of a heroine, Sarah Strange. About Twilight . . .
Sorry, but I don’t comment on Twilight at all, now, except to say that I haven’t read it or seen the movies. Yes, I do appreciate readers who know my books—some of them who have known them since the Vampire Diaries came out back in 1990-91 and Night World somewhat later—and who make lists of the similarities between my books and the Twilight series. I appreciate most the readers who’ve read all my series and thus can make complete lists. But I’m not sure what, if anything, I might “do” about the lists. Why do you write urban fantasy?
I suspect it is because it was fantasy literature that had the most influence on me when I was a child and adolescent. I’ve often said that as a child I was certain that magic must exist, and that I would find it. But by the time I was twelve or thirteen I realized that if I wanted magic I was going to have to make it for myself. I was already a writer by then—I’d started with poetry when I was four or five, and showed my work to teachers by age 6. But I was a storyteller from a much younger age than that. As far as I can remember, I always had several stories going on in my head and many of them partially written down. My first two published books were only “urban fantasy” in the sense that C. S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia are. But my first bestsellers were the next books I wrote, The Vampire Diaries. Once I got started with vampires and witches and so on, I got so many letters (yes, snail mail—this was the old, old days) asking me to write more that I did write more. I want to write a book, but I don’t know what about. How do you get inspired?
I’m not going to be much help, I’m afraid. I am always doing one story or another in my head, so you could say that my problem is being too inspired—many of my stories never get written down because I can’t keep up with the thoughts in my mind. There is one exception. For ten years I suddenly had writer’s block, before the end of the Night World series. My sister’s husband was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer, and my mother with terminal cancer. While I was immersed in this, I had no inspiration at all. I couldn’t finish the book I was in the middle of writing. There were no stories in my head. That was the worst time of my life, and I could find no way to break through the block. But I tried meditation, going without reading or watching videos at all so I was stuck in my own head, taking care of toddlers, writing just any old junk on a keyboard, writing in a notebook instead of on computer, writing diary entries, and writing nonfiction. Nothing helped me, but it might help you. I want to be an author someday . . . How do I become a writer?
I think there are two things I would advise for someone who wants to be a writer. The first is to keep reading—not just vampire books, but any and all books that even slightly catch their interest. Reading will open the world to you.
And, second, write a little something every day. It can be as simple as a long text conversation (but remember that when you’re sending in your first book, grammar counts!) or writing in a diary, or scribbling down an idea for a story. But the absolute best training is to try to write stories in a normal conversational style, to keep a blog that you update frequently, to write fanfic, or to write poetry (if you want to be a poet—or even if you don’t.) Fanfic? Is it okay for me to write fanfic based on your work?
Of course. I’d be a hypocrite and an idiot to try to stop it. I don’t mind what you do with my characters as long as you don’t rub my nose in it. I might even run a contest for the most interesting (G-rated) fanfic ever written in all the years since my various series first came out. The same with art—which I’m glad to see, always. Will you link my blog or site to your site?

I am very sorry to have dropped the ball on two or three foreign blogs that wanted me to link to them. With my old site, it took a long time and a lot of money to change anything about the site. If you liked Vampire Diaries, then you might enjoy my Night World series--it's primarily about vampires, but it also mixes in werewolves, shapeshifters, witches, etc. In these stories, you'll find vampires who've fallen helplessly in love with their human soulmates--but it's the law that any Night Person who loves a human must be punished by death. If you like Damon, you'll probably also like the vampires Ash Redfern, Quinn, and Morgead--not to mention James Rasmussen of Secret Vampire, the first book in the Night World series. Stefan's "sapphire" ring protected him from the sun when we all know by now it's lapis lazuli. Elena in the beginning saw a picture of her as the prom queen and mused over it since the Guardians changed the timeline. Near the end of the book, she was surprised when she saw another picture of her as prom queen. In the original books Klaus used Tyler to enter someone Vicki's house. Now Stefan can't enter a house unless that person lives there. Has Phantom been altered by a ghost writer?

I am a major fan. i have some questions on the vampire diarires, I'm not sure how well you can answer them because as i just foung out today you not writing the book anymore. i've read all the vampire diaries book, and one of the stefan diaries. in shadow souls when damon and elena are on their way to Bloddeuwedd's party damon was about tell her what everyone missed in the story of the Salvatore brothers simultanelously killed eachother through the heart, but he was interuppted and now you dron't even have a chance to go back to that (pg 467 of shadow souls). Which brings me to my next question; when did that happen? i mean damon and staefan killing eachother through thre heart in the first stefan diaries which is the inly stefan diaries book i've read, none of that happend. in the first vampire diaries book the awakening stefan tells the story of how kathrine died by suiced and in the first stefan diaries book she died in the church, (continued)

I was gravely disappointed to find out a ghostwriter would be writing the rest of your absolutely amazing vampire diaries. To be honest, you are the reason I want to be an author someday! I wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed your books and how much you have inspired me into my own vampire-werewol f-witch (pretty much any supernatural species) world! I also very selfishly wanted to ask you, if it wouldn't be too much trouble and if you're not busy (I wouldn't want you to be distracted instead of writing more world-changing books) I liked reading what would have happened if you had continued the Vampire Diaries. But never got fully satisfied knowing The Hunters was written by someone else. I was wondering if you could let me know about your version. You most likely get this a lot. But I am a HUGE FAN of your's, and your Night World series. I don't really have a favourite book, since well all of them are my favourites, since it is so hard to actually choose, haha.
I looked at the 'Ask L.J' part of the site, and seen the 'Fanfic? is it okay for me to write fanfic based on your work?' and read your answer to it.
Since you allow that, are you fine with Cross-overs? Like someone writing a Fanfiction of your work, but adding in their own character, or based about their character but in your story world with the characters?
I was just wondering, since you are fine with allowing people to write fanfic's based on your stories. If I could write a Fanfic based on 'The Night World', though as a cross-over so I can have my own character in it. And have her being a soul-mate to one of the Main male characters.

I just wanted to let you know that I absolutely loveyour work. I have read every single one of your novels and love each and every one of them. I was quite disappointed to hear that you would no longer be writing The Vampire Diaries. Although I have continued reading the works of the ghost writer, I must say she/he is not nearly as talented as you are. After reading the first two works of the ghost writer I was disappointed in the way she/he made Elena seem confused about her feelings for Stefan and Damon and a bit childish and how she/he discontinued the possible romance between Bonnie and Damon. It seemed more like the TV show than the great novels you have written. Don't get me wrong, I love the TV show, although it has strayed far from the book. I know it is out of your power to continue to write them but I do think that your writing is excellent and I don't think any author can be as great as you.

There are no explicit sex in ANY of my books. I have lots of 10-12-year-old fans. You might want to skim some of The Forbidden Game and Dark Visions books to see if you feel they are okay for your granddaughter. But, yes, she is in the age group I wrote for.
I have adult fans too, mainly because of the vocabulary--not swearing, just a lot of hard words for middle graders. Avant-garde, abjure, and often poetry quotes.

I have watched the show and read all of the books, and obviously recognize the heavy digression from your original trilogy with the writing on the show.
What I am curious about is whether you felt the core of the characters were (somewhat) intact, if Cassie's struggle and acceptance with her magic and lineage was somewhat true to the psychological experience your Cassie felt in the books, what you thought of the writing on the show, and what the number one thing you would have liked to have seen changed would have been.

We would rather read your books then listen to them so that we may see things as they really are and put our own touch to the mental movie that is played when reading. Kindle Worlds fanfics usually cost between $0.99 and $3.99 based on length. I think the VD ones are on the longer side so $3.99. I don't know for sure, though.

Before I became the obsessive reader I am there were few books I valued as much as your Night World series, and still the series hold such a place in my heart. As Ive seen above and read of before I know you are currently writing the last installment of the series, and I cant wait! Well, actually I can and will, haha. Regarding the "Night World" series, only read the third book, "Spellbinder" and can say that it's incredible to a degree that deserves a lot only for these two materials.

I am reading Night world book #9 called WitchLight. I saw there is suppose to be a book #10 called Strange Fate. I have tried finding it at the libraries and at the online sites and no one has it where I can get it and read it. It is very sad that I am really into this series and I will not know how it will end. who is the 4th Wild Power and how do they find this person and will Circle Daybreak come out on top. I am really into the supernaturals finding soulmates that they would least expect and I love the way everyone is starting to come together and how one story relates to the ones before it. Please tell me how I can find this book so I can find out what happens. thank you.

I admired you even more when I won your Black Rose contest and was mailed your autograph and a real gold plated rose.
I was always angry when the tv shows got everything wrong. I have to ask, did you try suing the people that took your book rights away?
YOU CAN'T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS. You have sat back and let them ruin your books, it's NOT fair. There has to be some sort of legal way to take back your book rights. They can't do this to you.

I recently finished The Forbidden Game and was wondering if you had plans to make it into a movie. It would be really great if you did because I am nt alowed to watch past season 2 of The Vampire Diaries and I'm really starved for more of your book/television adaptations. And, the book was just plain AMAZING. So, if you do end up making it a movie or tv show, I would be so, so, so happy.

I'm really sorry to ask the same question that everyone else does, but since all the updates I can find are from 2013 or older I was wondering if a new "release" date was possible for strange fate. I understand it's a vet long and detailed book to write I just thought there was no harm in asking. It's been four years since any updates and the other ones I'm finding are from 2007. Just wanted to try. Thank you for the amazing night world series.
